Resume Help - Cover letter question

Expert: Michelle Penn - 7/3/2009

Question
Dear Michelle:

What do you think of the following cover letter opener?

"In reviewing my resume, you will find that I possess all the attributes of a perfect match, from (skills) to (experience or attributes). I am excited to learn of your job opening because I have been searching for a company just like yours to make real use of my experience"

Thanks,
Sheryl

Answer
Hello Sheryl,

Thank you for your question! That is a great cover letter opener. I only have two suggestions:

1. Reword the phrase, "all the attributes of a perfect match." It is a little awkward.

2. The second sentence deals only with what YOU want, and not with what you can offer the company. Focus on the employer and write about what you offer. Your opening paragraph must stand out and grab the reader's attention. A good way to do this is to state how you will benefit the company; i.e., "My experience is capturing new customer accounts will benefit ABC Company as it prepares to expand into new territories."

Good luck with your job search, and please feel free to ask a follow-up question.

Best regards,
Michelle Penn Swanson, CPRW
