Question Without getting into too many details, I have an urgent legal need to find the exact amount of a contribution to my IRA account from late 1992 / early 1993. This was a rollover from an employer-sponsored 401K type account put into my individual IRA account. Both the employer and investment firm do not keep records older than 7 years, and I also have "purged" my records from that long ago. I would think that since IRA's are government regulated, that there has to be records somewhere that list dates and amounts of assets rolled into a person's IRA. Please advise how I can gain access to this. Thank you for your help.
Answer Lynne,
I would suggest that you ask the IRS for their records from those years. If they will not provide them (and they will provide them for some years), I would suggest that you and your accountant "estimate" the amount as best as you are able.
Call the IRS at their general help help line to get directions from here on how to get the records they have for you for those years.
