Question
My niece who is 15 years old has been waking up with joint pain every morning for the last week (every day it is a different area).  Yesterday it was her ankle.  Today her ankle does not bother her but she could not walk from pain in her knees. She had a blood test that showed she has some inflammation.  Was told to see a rheumatologist by her internist.  She does not have swelling.  She was on a medication that her dermatologist prescribed for acne but after being on it for two weeks she had a rash and she stopped it.  The medicine does list a side effect of joint pain.  But the pain is not getting better although she stopped it and what could be the reason for inflammation.  Do you have any idea what is going on and what should she do.  Thank you for much for any information you would give.

Answer
Tania,

It is hard to say with this limited information. It could be a form of arthritis or auto-immune disease. It could also be a simple a virus. My son had a virus in his hip and could not walk for a week. The best thing to do is see the rheumatologist. He or she will be able to do a complete evaluation and run any other tests that may be needed.
