Rheumatology (including Arthritis) - ANA bloodwork

Expert: Amelia Yaussy - 6/18/2009

Question
the doctor has called and told me my ANA bloodwork is very abnormal. i asked what exactly this is and he states this is testing for arthritis and wasn't really willing to explain any further and merely stated he was gonna run somemore bloodwork.  could you please explain what this ANA test is and what it means.  Thank you so much

Answer
ANAs are Anti Nuclear Antibody tests.  (You can search online for more information about them.)  For scleroderma, positive ANAs only support a diagnosis from history, symptoms, and clinical observation.  You didn't say what symptoms prompted you to see the doc and for him to run these tests.
