Rheumatology (including Arthritis) - Degenerative Arthritis

Expert: Karen Brawner - 12/24/2004

Question
I have a bony protrustion in the lower left central rib cage.  A CT revealed degenerative arthritis.  I would like to know the cause, prognosis and treatment of this condition.  Thank U    Frank

Answer
Dear Frank,  Degenerative arthritis is also known as Osteoarthritis (same thing, just another term)....  It is caused by "wear" and as wear takes place the cartiledge hardens or simply deteriorates....  The prognosis depends on the current disease status, where the OA is located, your weight and ability to exercise or be active etc...  Treatment also is determined by location of the OA, your symptoms/pain etc...

If this OA is located in the Thoracic Lumbar region of the spine then it is located in the middle of your back because the 12 thoracic Vertibrae are attached to the rib cage...

Here are some web sites that may help explain your condition and you need to make sure you get GOOD medical help for the best treatment of your OA as possible including physical therapy if appropriate....
