Question
Does Juvenile RA carry over into adulthood?  I was 6 when I had 3 rheumatoid nodules removed from left foot and started on Gold Salts with complete remission.  2 more nodules removed at age 23.  About 3 years ago I started feeling general malaise and poor immune system.  Was diagnosed with reoccurant shingles.  Blood results were positive for rheumatoid factor and ANA, sed rate WNL.  I was sent to a rheumatologist and was told not to worry I didn't have joint pain or swelling.  2 months ago I was ill with a high fever (104) for 7 days.  Since then I awake with swollen hands, wrist and feet. The most severe pain is in both thumbs and index fingers.  I have been taking 800 mg Motrin three times a day with little relief. The swelling gets better as the day goes on, and the pain is more tolerable if I keep moving.  I went to see my Dr, as soon as I said I had pain, she interrupted me and Dx me with fibromyalgia.  She seemed very disinterested that my Grandmother died from systemic scleroderma and my previous postive blood work.  She agreed to repeat the blood work and I have a follow up appointment this week. I have noticed decreased functioning in my hands that is interferring with my work and daily life.  I did however find out that my current sed rate is again normal at 12...is this possible with all the pain and swelling?

Answer
Hi Tommalynn

For one thing we don't do sed rates anymore because they are unreliable, we do CRP tests. JRA can and often does carry into adulthood. Fibromyalgia is the most ridiculous Dx for these symptoms I have ever heard of, and I heard a bunch. I would check for food allergies as a possibility as well, finding a good Internal Medicine doctor is where you should start, it sounds like you need another opinion.

Good Luck!
