Rheumatology (including Arthritis) - aching knees----

Expert: Karen Brawner - 9/6/2004

Question
Could me symptoms be arthritis.I was tested for
it but came out negative.
My ankles, knees, elbows ache all the time like a tooth ache.It hard to fall asllep at night because they ache so much I have to keep moving and stretching my legs and ankles.
When I get up in morning and stand up my ankles hurt to walk on for a few minutes.
What could it be?

Answer
Dear Debbie,   You said you were tested but didn't say what test the doctor did.....  If you had a blood test done for the Rheumatoid Factor (RF) and it was negative, then the chance that you have Rheumatoid Arthritis is slim....  However, there is not blood work that can diagnose Osteoarthritis....  This type of arthritis can only be diagnosed with MRI....  If you have had both the MRI and the RF blood test and they come back negative for any type of arthritis, then I suggest that you have blood work done for other types of autoimmune disease...

Thank you,   karen
