Rock Gardens - moss

Question
Hope you can help:  I live in central SC. I have a flat rock terrace/patio that I have transplanted some moss in the cracks. Saw "how to" on HGTV went to the woods, and so far, even though it has been hot & dry, with it being in the shade,my watering and feeding beer & buttermilk, it is doing well.  Problem is the weeds are also doing well.  Is there anything (herbicide) that I can apply to kill the weeds yet not distrub my moss growth?   Thanks, M

Answer
Hi, and thanks for your question. A good way to decimate weeds is the application of a glyphosphate based weedkiller such as RoundUp (U.K. brand). This is systemic weedkiller that kills the roots of perrenial weeds. Some weeds such as stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) may need more than one application. The best way to apply it is in a small squirty bootle and spray only on the weed, as glyphosphate will kill everything. It does not toxify the soil and as soon as the weeds die, they can be used for compost as the weedkiller does not remain within them. It is important that you read the instructions on the bottle. You should be able to find it at a garden centre. I'm afraid I have no idea of the American brands of the glyphosphate weedkiller. Glad to hear your moss is doing well. Please get in touch if you have any further questions.
