Question I was wondering if rats are known to be heavy sleepers because mine just freaked me out. She was sleeping on my shoulder for a little while, and I picked her up gently to go put her back in her cage and she didn't really move. I then laid her down again and she didn't move. I talked to her really loudly and gently shook her which led to a little less gentler shaking because she didn't respond. She finally jumped up and tried to hide, and when I put her back in her cage she started eating so she was okay afterwards. But it took longer then it has in the past and I don't know if I should be worried. I mean if she's in her little house sleeping she doesn't wake up if I call her, I have to move the cage a little. And other times when she's napped with me, she wakes up easily. This is my first rat so I don't know if i should be worried and if I should bother the vet with this.
Answer This does sound rather strange. Mine always seem to be alert and aware of what is going on already. I was thinking maybe she could be deaf and thats why she doesn't respond but if she still doesn't wake up when you touch her then that's very weird. I think getting the vet to check her just incase would be a good idea and would put your mind at rest. Have you thought about getting another female to live with her? They do love company so much! Mine would sleep curled up together and one would have her arm around the other! Its very cute. Well good luck and I hope its nothing serious
