About Crystal
Expertise
I can answer most questions about hedgehogs. I can answer questions about basic care, handling, symptoms and treatments to common hedgehog illnesses, housing, and how to make cheap toys for hedgehogs. I cannot answer questions about how to treat serious illnesses in these animals, but I can help find a good veterinarian in any state.

Experience
I have owned a female African Pygmy hedgehog for four years. I have also read many publications on the care of this breed of hedgehog.

Question
I was thinking about getting a hedgehog and i was going to put it in a big wired rabbit cage but i dont want him walking on the wire all the time...My question is can i put carpet down on top of the wire? we were going to have a litter box in there too.

Answer
No, a hedgehog can escape through the wires.  Also, you shouldn't put anything with fibers that can come loose in with a hedgehog. The fibers can come lose and wrap around their legs, and possibly cut them off. The same goes with your hair, so be sure that it doesn't get in the cage. I know it is hard to believe an animal would do that, but it happens.

SOrry this took so long, I had some computer problems the first time i brought it up and it slipped my mind. A large plastic storage container works well, and so does a "kiddie" swimming pool. You don't need a lid. Most hedgehogs will not try to climb out, but i wouldn't recommend putting any tall houses near the sides. Do not use the wire rabbit cage.
