Question
Hi there I am Katie,
A friend of mine has 2 chinchillas and they happen to be male and female. The female is pregnant now and is going to expect babies. When she does have her babies he wants to give me one of them. I already have 2 guinea pigs and I put them in a bigger cage because the other one I thought was to small for 2. So if I get one of his babies is it okey for me to put him\her in the smaller gp cage it is 24ft long and 16ft high is that okey or will I have to get something bigger? One other thing how long is the pregnancy how many days will it take, and how long before the babies are weened. Thanks alot
I hope you can answer my questions. E-mail me back at struikh@isys.ca

Answer
sorry I havent replied.  I tried to but this site was not working on my computer.

The cage you are on about is fine.Wire bottomed cages are not a good idea, as babies have a habit of getting their little legs caught between the wire, which can break them.  Chinchilla pregnancies last for 111 days and the young are born fully furred and eating normal food in a couple of days.  Mum continues to feed them until they are 6-8 weeks old. If the babies are still suckling longer than 8 weeks old, it maybe a good idea to separate them, as mum will become rundown.
