The first thing I teach my rats is to come when called. I snap my fingers, and give them a tiny bit of food for getting in my hand. This is very helpful when you have an escapee. Other things follow, put him on the couch, step back & snap he may jump to you. If he's afraid of heights you could run a 2x4 across the room & get him to run it. He should also be able to climb rope.
