I have 3 rats and would highly recomend taking the rat to the vet. It will cost you aprox 80$ for visit and a shot of anitbiotics as well as a take hope perscription of drops that you will give for 14days twice a day. If you wait your rat can just get sicker and sicker until it cant breath and coughs blood. It a very sad thing to see and the rat can suffer for days.
If your parents dont want to see you cry your eyes out after witnessing this they should take you.. its way worse to suffer and see your rat suffer.. Also if they are still not going to help you out. You can try purchasing a bottel of echinecea at your local healfood store. Just make sure that it does not contain any alcohol. You can find this on the web too. I find that is has helped in the past. The drops are given to the rat for like two weeks a few drops a day to help build the imune system. Rat Vitamins in the water are help too. Good Luck and God bless
