Question
Hi,
yesterday there was a mouse massacre at my house! It was all very distressing as my 2 cats brought in 4baby mice! They must have found a nest. All but one are dead. The one survivor does not have any sign of open wounds but may have a damamged rear leg. I kept him/her cupped in my warm hand for hours yesterday and he is appearing a little brighter but there is little movement. Have popped him in a little box with soft bedding. His eyes are still closed, he does have fur. I hate to think he is in pain. He has licked a little water from my hand but hasnt had anything else. I will call the vet. Do you think his chances are fairly poor? Any other tips?

Answer
Hi there, if you can get him to a vet then he might have a chance of survival. If it survives after being treated then it would be a good idea for it to go to a wildlife rehabilitation centre where it could be with other mice and they will be able to handrear it. However there is a good chance that it may die of shock both from being caught by a cat and from the pain of its sore leg. That may be too much for such a tiny baby to cope with. If you get it to a vet asap then you will have done all that you can and that's a really good thing. If its going to be hours before you can get it to a vet it will need fed with a puppy or kitten replacer milk as they would probably be fed every hour or two by their mother. You could feed using a syringe with no needle on the end. It would also need stimulated to pee and poo by rubbing its bottom with damp cotton wool. Hope that this helps and that the little thing is ok.
