Question
Hello, I have a 2 year old black hooded rat who has recently aquired a small lump (about the size of a marble) under her armpit. After reading up in the rat book it appears that lumps in rats are quite common, should I take her to the vets? As I don't want her to be opperated on due to the high death rate among small animals. However I would like to know if there are any preventitive medicines availiable from the vets

                Thank - You

Answer
Hello Sarah,

It's best to take her to the vet's as it might just be an abscess, which will need antibiotics and draining. If it is a tumour, then an op at her age is not always advisable, but there are tables/meds which can be given to srink or stop the lump growing any bigger.

If you still feel that you don't want to take her to the vet's then you could try Sharks Cartilage, give 1/10th of the human dose twice a day.

hope this helps
J.
