About Lindsay Newell
Expertise
I can answer nearly all questions to do with rodents. I am an experienced rodent breeder breeding rats, mice, degus, hamsters and Gerbils. I also breed guinea pigs. I currently work at Grangewood zoo with a variety of mammals, birds and snakes. Any questions about birds or reptiles can also be asked as I have tarantulas and reptiles and birds.

Subject: our rats

Question
Our rats appear to have developed a scaley/bumpy rash on their tails (one is worse than the other). They don't actually seem bothered by it but it doesn't look normal. Any ideas? These are our first rats so we are novices :)  thanks

Answer
I would take them to see a vet. This could be several things:

1. skin Mites
2. Both rats are fighting (this happens with mice more than rats, they bite each others tails to stop the other getting away)
3. attacked by an animal

Be sure to mention these to the vet so as they have an idea what to look for.
