About Stonesdoug
Expertise
I run one of the internet's busiest Rolling Stones message board www.shidoobee.com. I have been a fan of the Rolling Stones for 43 years. I have seen the band 140 times since my first show in 1966. My hobby is locating information on the band and passing it on to anyone who might be interested. My major category is Songs and Records and history of the Rolling Stones. Here's a picture of Bernard Fowler in Atlanta on the last tour/ Cheers! STONESDOUG

Question
Hi:

Great web site you have.  What is the story behind Sympathy...?  How did Mick/Keith come up with the lyrics?  It's an old (but delightful) war horse, but a fellow fan asked me how the song came about & I am very curious as well.  I know there was talk about devil worship & all those rumors.  That makes for good media, but what is the true story behind this classic?

John - A fan from Lansing, Mi who was front row at Ford Field in Detroit for the Lick's tour.

Answer
Hiya John-
Sympathy is actually based on a Russian novel "The Master and margarita"- it's about Satan coming to earth and showing all he had done. Mick had read the book and expanded on the novel. Here's what wikipedia has to say about the book

I was at the B stage for the Ford Fiel show- we had a great party on the rook of hockeytown beforehand=----take care
