Roofing - Covering Tar
Expert: Bruce A. Ryan II, RRO - 10/21/2009
Question Hi.
I have an old metal roof that has been patched many time.
I want to put elastomeric coat over the metal but understand that tar will seep through it. On the patched areas of tar, can I use a "metal" tape (the kind you use on metal ducts) to completely cover the tar? Will this keep the tar from seeping through the plastic coating?
If not, can you suggest what I can put over the tar before the plastic coating?
Thanking you so much.
Michele
Answer Michele,
I would suggest using a metal roof coating such as Karnak 50 that is compatible with asphalt products. If coal tar based wet patch has been used on your roof, then any coating is going to have problems. You must remove it, clean.
Otherwise, consider replacing or recovering your metal roof.
