Roofing - Timberline hd shingle- application manuf. spec
Expert: JD Shoemaker - 10/31/2009
Question "My house was just re-roofed (tear-off)with Timberline high definition prestique 30 shingles, charcoal. I noticed we were not getting high definition affect so I measured many courses and found the shingle offset was not being closely adhered to required by manufacturers instructions for application. For example some shingles were off spec by 3or 4 inches and as much as 8 inches.
What are the consequences of not following manufacturers application instructions with these shingles. Besides appearance issues will leaks occur in the future. What are acceptable offset tolerances for these shingles. What recourse do I have. I believe the roof should be re-done-am refusing to pay balance due. Thanks
Answer Oh wow! I feel your pain on this one....it seem like you are a consumer, who compares based on QUALITY and performance, by your selection of the GAF-ELK Timberline 30 year high def shingle.
I have not seen your roof, but can picture it based on your description. You are with-in your right to hold the payment, until you receive assurance that you are receiving what you contracted for.
Follow this link to see the exact instructions regarding the shingles installation.

Here is the link to print your own copy of the manufacturer warranty.
Also, may I recommend that you do the following:
Ask the roofer where he bought the shingles from...contact THAT supplier, and ask for the LOCAL GAF-ELK rep cell phone number. Call him directly, and ask him to visit your home, to review the roofing thus far, and to get his opinion of IF, the roof will have the manufacturers warranty and protections with the way it is installed. IF he passes the roof and says you are covered, the your worries are moot and you can pay off the roofer. But if the rep has suggestions, at least you will know how to proceed, in a LEGAL and REASONABLE manner, that your contractor cannot argue with you over!
Good Luck!
