Roofing - Timberline hd shingle- application

Expert: Michael J. Owen - 10/31/2009

Question
"My house was just re-roofed (tear-off)with Timberline high definition prestique 30 shingles, charcoal.  I noticed we were not  getting high definition affect so I measured many courses and found the shingle offset was not being closely adhered to required by manufacturers instructions for application. For example some shingles were off spec by 3or 4 inches and as much as 8 inches.
What are the consequences of not following manufacturers application instructions with these shingles.  Besides appearance issues will leaks occur in the future. What are acceptable offset tolerances for these shingles. What recourse do I have.  I believe the roof should be re-done-am refusing to pay balance due. Thanks

Answer
Hi Mike. If you are talking about the distance variation from row to row, providing the upper shingle completely covers the butt joint of the shingle below, it is not a problem. According to the manufacturers installation instructions the offset is a constant measurement but this is only a standard practice for speed and ease of application for the roofing contractor.

As you can see from the pictures the pattern appears to be random and not, as in regular three tab shingles, a definite layout pattern.
It is very unlikely that leaks will occur in the future but, in that event, the manufacturer may use that as an excuse not to honor the warranty.
I believe the instructions are clearly defined on each packet and they are there for a reason. Your best course of action may be to contact the manufacturer and ask if your roof is, or will, be in any way voiding the warranty.
Hope this helps to answer your question.
