Roofing - Metal roof condensation

Expert: Todd E. Miller - 11/1/2009

Question
I have a house with a new metal roof on. The up stairs is finished. It consists of drywall plastic insulation plastic and then the metal roof. The condensation is now dripping down the end wall next to the attic space. What can be done to fix this problem.

Thanks Joe

Answer
Having plywood decking on the roof and underlayment would possibly help. What is happening is the metal is conduction cold form the outside and them warm moist air from the inside is condensing.

Increasing insulation on the ceiling and ventilation between the insulation and the roofing is what needs to be done. If those things cannot be done then the roof panels need to be removed, decking installed along with underlayment and the roofing put back down.

Also, make sure that you do not have any sources of excessive moisture inside the home such as bathroom fans or dryer vents that are not vented outward.

I hope this helps.
