Roofing - Roof Structure

Expert: Brad Zacharia - 6/30/2009

Question
QUESTION: I was recently in my attic and noticed that some of the boards that are between the rafters have come loose on one side.  I tried to put the board back in place but it no longer fits between the rafters.  Is this something that I need to be worried about?  Your help is appreciated.

Best Regards,
Eric Barber

ANSWER: Yes, the boards are apparently cut too short and will move and can pop through he roof.

QUESTION: Thanks for your response.  In my case the boards came out and now they are too long to put back in.  What do you think has caused this and should I call the builder to come and check the roof structure?  Thanks again.

Best Regards,
Eric Barber

Answer
First you said they don't fit between between the rafters which means they are too short. Now you say they are too long which I don't see a problem as far as the rafters go. As they pass over the rafters you nail them. If they are too long they should stick out past the end of the building or lay on top of the next board which would leave a big lump so I don't think that's it either. I really can't comment on this because I don't know what you have based on your description. I'd need pictures.
