Roofing - Roof vents

Expert: Michael J. Owen - 6/28/2009

Question
I own a ranch home in Milwaukee,WI, with a hip roof.  Do you recommend slant back roof vents over a ridge vent?  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Mike. Personally, I have always used ridge venting assuming that hot air rises and if it is vented out from the highest possible point on the roof that should be better. However, I have installed pretty much every type of vent and slant back work equally as well. My only concern with them is if in torrential rain and high wind they may possibly allow water to enter the attic.
I guess if a tornado happens to pay a visit, there will not be too much difference between the two types.
Short answer: I would pick ridge vents.
