Roofing - metal roofing

Expert: Todd E. Miller - 6/26/2009

Question
What are the pros and cons of putting the wooden slats between shingled roof and new metal roof?

Thanks
Sharon

Answer
Sharon,

First of all, it is important to know that not all products are designed to be installed in this manner.

As far as why to do it if the product can be installed that way? The main reason would be if the attic cannot be ventilated. Having the airgap behind the metal would help some in avoiding condensation and also help some with energy efficiency and to guard against winter ice damming.

If the attic is properly vented though (per building code) then I see little reason for installing the roofing on battens.

I hope this helps.

All Best.
