Question My son is in the process of installing (for his first time) a 30 year, architectural grade shingle on his 2/12 mobilehome roof. His nail gun did not have a depth set, and he's worried that some of the nails may be too sunk. None of these sets cracked the shingles, nor are any of the edges lifted, but he's still concerned about potential pooling of water. The inspector has seen a portion of the completed roof and found nothing wrong, although he did not lift the shingles to check. Does my son need to be worried?
Answer 2/12 is the absolute minimum for shingles and even then it takes special procedures to keep it from leaking so I'd say if you do the shingles on a 2/12 slope you'll be vulnerable to leaks. I've never seen a depth gauge on a nail gun. The gun I have depends on the air pressure. If the nail goes in too far you lessen the pressure. You won't crack shingles in the summer.
