Roofing - Patch roof with different shingles?

Expert: Michael J. Owen - 7/6/2009

Question
We have some hail damage on our roof.  Our adjuster/insurance company has given us money to replace the damaged shingles with new shingles. The problem is that we have Certain Teed Organic shingles.  The shingles now available by Certain Teed are Fiberglass.  The manufacturer does not recommend mixing these two shingles and will not warranty them.  Do we fight the insurance company over this??  Or will our roof be okay and leak proof w/ two different types of shingles??
Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Dena. With the utmost respect, this is a tough question to ask. Why? Because it puts me, or any other expert, "on the spot".
However, I think your first course of action would be to explain to your insurance company exactly what you have told me and try and get them to cough up for at least one side of the house to be re-shingled completely.
Secondly. The manufacturer will use any excuse to "void the warranty" because if they can avoid paying up, they will do so. Like anything tou buy. If you break the seal or modify it in any way, your warranty is no more......
Personally, I would say the roof would be perfectly okay with a mixture of shingles but, obviously, cannot be held responsible if some unknown chemical reaction took place that set your home on fire. Just kidding.
If possible, I would replace whole areas instead of doing one or two here and there. If nothing else, the colors will not match and your neighbors may complain about an eyesore.
Hope this helps to answer your question/s.
