Question My roof on my lake house is looking waivy and uneven, the house is 36 years old and only used in the summer, the area it's in get's about 200 inches of snow per year and I want to know what the cause and fix is for the repair. The venting doesn't look real good and I am worried that it could potentially cave in under the extreme weight of the winter snow in the coming year/s. Thanks
Answer Hi Bruce. I would suspect that what has happened is the roof decking, whether it be plywood or OSB, has got wet or damp and is sagging down between the roof trusses due to the weight of the snow. If the waves are about 24 inches apart, then this is most likely the cause.
The problem should be visible from inside the attic providing there is access to it. This can't be fixed by adding wood between the trusses because it will pop the nails/screws at the edges.
Perhaps it is time for a new roof with at least 5/8" - 3/4" plywood or better yet, 1" x 4" or 6" pressure treated boards.
Also I would check that there is sufficient ventilation to the attic space.
Hope this helps and good luck.
