Roofing - installing metal roof over shingled roof

Expert: Todd E. Miller - 8/14/2009

Question
We've been told by some roofers that installing a metal roof over our shingled(over o.s.b.) roof wouldn't be a good idea, due to the o.s.b. sheathing.  We're trying to find out what the reasoning is; the whys and what fors, if you will.  Maybe it's because we live in the Fl. panhandle(hurricane issue?), we actually live a good 45 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.  Can you please help clear up our question?  Thanks for your consideration!

Answer
I, too, do not know what their reasoning is. If you can get details, please email them to me at todd@asktoddmiller.com

There may be things they see and know locally that I cannot possibly see from Ohio over the internet.

However, generally OSB is okay as a substrate perhaps it has not weakened or rotted in some way.
