Roofing/Ridge vent

Question
Hi Dale,

I just purchased a house that has irregular pitch.  The back of the house is a 4, then it peaks to an 18 in the front.  I am noticing water leaking from the valuted ceiling and my only thought is that it is coming in at the ridge vent.  After investigation I noticed that when a new roof went on about 5 years ago and the previous homeowners reused the metal ridge vent.  I have two conerns.

1) because they reused the ridge vent it is now bent alittle and doesnt lay flat on the roof.  Could that be where the leaks are happening?

2)  Is this even the best kind of ridge vent for my irregular roof pitch(s)?  As you can imagine since the ridge is irregular the metal vent doesnt exactly sit on the roof straight up and down, rather cockeyed. Am I better off with a shingle over ridge vent?  I ask because I know the roof boards were replaced a few years back because of water damage.

Any guidance would be great, thanks

Answer
You are exactly correct in thinking that the ridge vent is the culprit.

Try using an Owens Corning VENTSURE ridge vent.

This vent is a shingle-over style.

My company, removes the area at the peak to expose the wood
we install ICE-SHIELD
We install the vent using a 2.5" nail.
We install a genuine shingle cap, using the same style nail, then we hand seal each tab...

Good luck!
