Roofing/replacing a flat roof

Question
Christena
I'm replacing the flat roof on my parent's 20x20 (est.) back porch. I'd like to create a slight pitch, just enough to allow water to run of and not pool. what can I do without removing the existing beams? Thanks

Answer
I would use non-pressure treated lumber on the side nearest the house to build up a pitch.  Remember to remove the old roofing on the existing roof to allow the area to dry and not allow condensation to build.  If you are putting shingles on, you will need to build up a pitch of at least 3 in 12 to obtain warranty, also cover the entire area with ice & water shield and install ventilation.  If you are not putting shingles, build the pitch to 1 in 12 and use a self sealing application. A peel and stick roll roofing with a tar primer directly on the plywood is an easy-to-do application.  Remember to put a flashing on the wall that attaches to the house.
