I was actually wondering the same thing! Just in the one episode when he's sitting on the couch with Darlene, Roseanne introduces him to Dan as "Darlene's new friend/Mark's little brother Kevin". I was curious how he went from Kevin to David. In a later episode though Roseanne makes the comment "Kevin's not even his real name Darlene just like calling him David" when referring to how David does whatever Darlene tells him to. Maybe that explains least that's how I like to think of it. :)

I do remember the first intro of David that he was called Kevin not David. But I also remember another episode of Roseanne making a comment to Dan about darleene making up David's name. I think it was one of the episodes' while she was away at art school and got in trouble for doing drugs, or somewhere around that time. Hope that may help!

I don't know where the person above me came up with their answers, but they're not quite right. David's real name IS actually Kevin. They later explained the name change in the show by stating in an episode that Darlene made up that name for him (showing, once again, her power over him). Lecy Goranson was not pregnant, but she left the show to attend college. They eventually decided to replace her character with Sarah Chalke, but Goranson still made appearances when she was available. Hope this helps.

Referring to the question about David being called Kevin first - this used to really bug me but after a bit of research i found out that it was apparantly because according to certain TV and Film Laws in America you cannot play two different characters that have the same name, Johnny Galecki was apparantly filming for something else at the time where his character was called David. Roseanne always intended to call him David and so switched back later. I'm not sure if this really is the case but that is what i have read.

Also in a later episode, i can't remember which one, Roseanne referrs to the fact that 'David is not even his real name, Darlene made that up!'I think this was just a subtle nod to the name change.

I saw the episode last night where Johnny Galecki made his first appearance, and he was called Kevin. I had to rewind the scene to make sure i had heard correctly. So here I am online researching useless info about a TV character.  LOL, at 2am none the less. However, I am happy to see  that I am not the only one who caught this.

After reading all of the comments.....

It still is confusing. The show tried to explain away the name change by saying that Darlene changed the name because she did not like the name Kevin. If this is true........why do David/Kevin's MOTHER and BROTHER call him David and not Kevin? They could have come up with a better excuse, like "David is his middle name", or, " Kevin was his fathers name, and he did not wan to be associated with his father in any way"

Simple explanation. He lied about his name. He was pissed over DJ and also because Becky and Mark played him essentially and stuck him babysitting.

but even David's mum, Mrs Healey calls him david...
