Subject: lightweight or not?

Question
Hey, I'm a freshman in highschool that's 5' 10" 150 lbs and my 2k is 7:15.  I am seriously considering being a lightweight which in all of the races we compete in is 150-155 lbs.  I know that I can bring my weight under 145 easily because I've got a little extra to lose.  Do you think it would be a better idea to stick with it in the heavyweight boat I'm currently in or lose a few lbs. and ask my coach if I can row lightweight?

Answer
Hi Connor: Not completely knowing your crew's situation, my guess is that if the coach wanted you to row in the lightweight eight, he'd put you in the lightweight eight.

I would bring the matter up to the coach if and only if you can answer the following three questions with a YES:

1) Is the lightweight eight fast and competitive?
2) Is the boat you are in is not fast and competitive?
3) Do you feel that your inclusion in the lightweight boat over someone else will make it go faster?

The good news is that your 2K time is very good and if your body type is one that you are going to stay in the 150-160 pound zone, you are going to eventually going to become a lightweight rower.

Regards/AP
