Question
Our daughter started rowing several months ago, loves it, and shows good potential. It looks like she will only be about 5'2", and around 125-130 pounds. Any chance she could row in college at that height?

Answer
Hi Vicki: If your daughter sticks with the sport and continues to improve, she has a 100% opportunity of rowing for a competitive college crew.  While her height might preclude her from rowing in the varsity 8 of some of your more elite crews and national programs, she can row for most other programs.  Odds are, she would row in the bow seat as shorter rowers tend to row in those positions.

Based on her height and weight, if she can maintain her weight at 125 pounds going into college, she can row lightweight.  This would put her with more rowers around her height.  Another thing to consider is that she can row in 2-person pairs in college.  If she can find someone around her height and skill level, the boat can be quite competitive.  She even has the option of rowing in a 1-person single, which she do at the club level (colleges crews don't race in singles) and compete for years to come.

I wish her luck/AP
