Expert: Mark Smith Date: 3/24/2008 Subject: Irish Royal Titles... Today
Question Dear Sir,
If a certain person were descended in the DIRECT, UNBROKEN, MALE-LINE DESCENT of a High King of Ireland, or any of the petty Kingdom's of Ireland, would that not give him/her the right to use the title of Prince/Princess of Ireland or that petty Kingdom?
In CURRENT DAY, if there were still a High King of Ireland, what style (Royal Highness????) would his children have? What style would he have (Imperial Majesty???), since he was in essence the HIGH KING of Ireland? Thank you for your time. I look forward to your reply.
Yours Sincerely,
James
Answer Hello James.
This is a tricky one. Under British law you can call yourself anything you like as long as there is no intention to deceive. The current Baron of Inchiquin who is a direct descendent of the Irish Kings of Thomond has, as one of his titles, Prince of Thomond. But it carries no real significance today and has not done for centuries.
The usual style for an Irish King would have been Your Majesty or Highness.
The real problem is proving direct descent, which to do after hundreds of years is almost impossible.
