About Dan Lamb
Expertise
I have a general knowledge of the band Rush, but I would say my expertise would be in their drummer Neil Peart such as setups over the years equipment etc...

Rush - Neil's Drum Specs

Expert: Dan Lamb - 9/19/2002

Question
Can you tell me the exact sizes of Neil's Tama Superstar Drum set? I'm looking for the diameter and depth of each drum. A friend of mine is trying to recreate a duplicate of that drum set and would like to be as close to Neil's original specs as possible.

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Mike.  hopefully this helps.  These excerts are from the "Rush Tribute: Mereley Players."  Great book for equipment guide.. all the way from Fly By Night to Test For Echo.  Loads of details.

Here is Neils drum specs for the '79 Tama Superstar drum kit.  6-ply(9mm) Japanese Birch shells and reinforcedment rings.  Hoops are triple-flanged steel (standard); low -profile hoops on 6" and 8" concerts.  The kit is also vibrafibed and hardware brass-plated by The Percussion Center:  2 14x24 bass drums, 5.5x6 concert tom, 5.5x8 concert tom, 6.5x10 concert tom, 8x12 concert tom, 8x12 tom tom, 9x13 tom tom, 12x15 tom tom, 16x18 floor tom.

And in '81 (Moving Pictures and Exit...Stage Left tours)  he upgraded with this:  '80 Tama Superstar gong bass drum (replaces the tympani), 14x20 on a Rollaway stand, 14x22 supported by shafts customized from that type of stand, '80 Tama Superstar timbales (replaced the brass ones), 6.5x13" and 14" with a Stagemaster stand and with regular triple-flanged tom lugs and hoops.  These drums did not have reinforcement rings and were Vibrafibed also.

Send me a pic if/when you get this assembled.  Have fun!
