Experience I?m originally from St.Pete, but live now in Moscow. Mostly I could advice you about those two cities, but some tips about Caucasus, Russian North and Golden Ring you may find useful too, cause I have travel there a lot in last few years. Question My husband is invited to a conference in Moscow in July of this summer. I would like to go along and then the two of us and travel for pleasure for a week or so either before or after the meeting. Where would you recommend we go? Are there any nice beaches to go to? Or any place else very typical that you suggest?
Probably we would travel by train- or is it practical to rent a car for exploring?
Answer You could try to deal with the same travel company in Russia, which help to organize conference and invites your husband. Otherwise – there are zillion travel agencies. Note that July is usually overbooked. No doubt – go to St.Petersburg after your Moscow visit, or try to reach Golden Ring area before it, depending on your interest and the visa type. Not sure about renting a car, take an express train (4,5 hour Msk -> StP, and there is a train to Helsinki) and arrange GR trip via agency. If you will choose StP – check G8 summit schedule ;)
Russian Black Sea resorts such as Sochi are pretty expensive, while most of others are far from tourist standards.
