Russian Culture - 1920's Russian Culture

Expert: Leo - 3/20/2006

Question
In general, what kind of behavior and cultural traits would you expect of adolescents growing up in 1920's Era Russia?

I ask you because I'm researching for a story I'm writing, and I want to stay true to history. I am doing other research but I trust this website to be truthful and correct. Thankyou.

Answer
Hello, Amber, thanks for your question.

The 1920's were probably one of the worst years in the history of the Soviet Russia and the USSR(the USSR was created in 1922).

It was a time of bloody civil war, just 3 years of Bolshevik Revolution. This topic is endless and diverse and you could easily find plenty of sources, both original(in Russian), and reflections by the Western historians and eyewitnesses.

To answer  your question briefly, I'd like you to imagine for a moment the terrifying situation where members of the same family were confronting and fighting each other with weapons in their hands... It was quite common for members of the family being murdered by each other... It was a time when it was approved and encourageded by the rulers to testify against parents or children with a deadly consequences for victims.
Huge number of novels and poetry was created to portray young "heroes" of that time, such as Pavel Korchagin and many others. By reading these sources you will better understand the new generation of rigid, cold, and cruel young people were created by the new regime. That generation will be responsible for the death and imprisonment of millions of people most of whom were innocent.
One of the most notorious "heroes" of that era was Pavlic Morozov who became an informer in his family and who was responsible for the death of his father...

Amber, don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Thank you.

Leo
