Expertise
I am Russian, I was a child when I emigrated, and felt like I had lost my roots for a while. So when the time came, I studied a bit about my own culture, and sort of reclaimed my heritage. I hope I know a fair bit about Russia, not only from being Russia and speaking Russian etc. but also through my own journey of finding out more about Russian culture.

Experience
I am Russian and have studied a bit about Russian culture, as well as doing a intercultural communication course at university.

Question
I am an american with russian ancestry but i look sort of oriental in a way i've been told this could be from a kosak lineage from russia mongolia what do you know about kosak i'm not sure if I spelled that right?

Answer
Hello Melissa!
Cossacks (English spelling), or in Russian Kazak, do not come from Mongolia, but from the steppes of Ukraine and Russia. Cossaks are a people who live in Ukraine and Russia (there are also a few in Poland or so I've heard but their numbers are small).
My guess is that you probably have another ethnicity in you rather than Cossack if you look Oriental.  For instance, Tatar...They are Tatar-Mongols (from Mongolia) who settled in Russia during the invasion of Ghenghis Khan. Or for instance Yakuts or Chuchki, they are ethnicities from the North, related to Eskimoes...Or you could have Kazakh ancestry, there are some many ethnicites in Russia it's hard to tell you, because Russian is far from a homogenous society. Your best bet is to divise a family tree and see where it leads you.
Hope I've helped, and you can ask me if you want me to explain in more detail something:)).
Katya.
