About Leo Expertise I was born in the form. USSR. I`m a native Russian speaker and have a first-hand experience in Russian language, culture, and customs.
Question I am determined to learn Russian and unfortunately, none of the colleges in my area offer Russian language classes. Therefore, it looks like I must learn it on my own.
Can you suggest any computer programs, books or audio tapes for me to begin my studies with? Is there a particular book that you feel best teaches Russian?
Thank you so so much. I appreciate it.
Answer Hello, Jessica. Thank you for your question.
I'd grade possible modes of learning new languages as follows:
1. Living in the country among native speakers and being exposed to that language 24/7... The best way...
2. Having a friend who's a native speaker and who's available for speaking with and correcting mistakes in writing and prononciation...
3. Taking a course with a teacher who's a NATIVE speaker...
4. Passive learning with CD's/tapes and books...
I'd recommend to begin with a step #4 since the learning of alphabet, grammar, and proper prononciation are all necessary in order to become proficient in any language.
There're many good sources of learning such as Pimsleur or Rosetta stone, or online websites.
Then, when your level of proficiency becomes higher, I'd recommend Rusiian internet sources which are numerous and include newspapers and libraries online, radiostations, etc and 99% of them are free!
But, above all, you need a strong desire to master the language! Motivation is paramount in any kind of activities. It's evident that you're very motivated and I'm sure you'll succeed in learning Russian!
