Question
Dear Natasha,

Please could you write out all the cases (singular and plural too if it exists) of зарубежье?

The reason is that I should like to see how the soft sign behaves in declension. Please also give the stress for each case.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

Answer
Dear Simon,

While зарубежье is occasionally used in plural, apparently it is not grammatical (this usage is probably ironic). The cases are:
Им. зарубежье
Род. зарубежья
Дат.зарубежью
Вин.зарубежье
Твор.зарубежьем
Предл.(о) зарубежье
The stress doesn't change: it falls on the third syllable.

I believe that the soft sign isn't omitted here because of the role it plays. For instance, if we take the word конь (/кон'/, also the 1st declension), we don't need ь in коня (/кəн'а/) and коню (/кəн'у/) as я and ю both make the н soft like in the nominative case, whereas in зарубежье (/зəруб'эжйэ/) we still need ь to preserve the й sound.
(I hope this isn't too complicated.)

Best wishes,
Natasha
