Russian Language - Russian surname

Expert: Anatoli - 6/20/2009

Question
Hello, do you know the meaning, origin and possibly other information about the Russian surnames Atarskih, Atazhahov and Agaltsoff?

Answer
Hi,

I can only provide the Russian script and a more standard romanisation.

Atarskih, Atazhahov and Agaltsoff:
Атарских, Атажахов, Агальцов
Atarskikh, Atazhakhov, Agaltsov

The names don't mean anything in modern Russian and may come from Caucasian replublics, except for the last one.

ogolets/agalets- оголец means a small fish.

Regards,
Anatoli
