Question I'm writing a short story for class where a Russian boxer uses the name "ярость" or rage as a ring nickname. Since I need to read it aloud, I need to be able say it, and it would also be easier for others in class to read if I had the way to write it with the Roman alphabet.
Answer Hi,
"ярость" is pronounced "yarost'" or simpler "yAHrast'". The stress is on the first syllable. The "о" becomes a shwa - an unclear sound similar to "a" in "about". R is rolled like in Spanish or Italian.
The final letter "ь" (мягкий знак - myakhky znak) - is a "soft sign" or a palatalization mark. It doesn't make a sound but changes the pronunciation of the preceding consonant. T can roughly be described as "t" in "tube" in British English (Ty - oo - b). No need to pronounce the "y" sound itself but try to say T as in "tube". A simple T is close enough.
