Russian Language - Mayakovsky

Expert: Anatoli - 9/27/2009

Question
Do you know what these two words mean? резинотрест & соввласть I think соввласть might be a contraction of советский + власть, but I'm not sure. They're both from (different) Mayakovsky posters. The context is: Лучших сосок не было и нет / готов сосать до старых лет / продаются везде / резинотрест коммунизм это соввласть + электрофикация thanks/спасибо :)

Answer
Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I couldn't access internet from home for some time but didn't have a chance to answer from work.

You are right about соввласть but this is not a common abbreviation. V. Mayakovsky has probably made it up or it was used in his time more often. The same thing is for резинотрест - "rubber trust", meaning a company or trust producing rubber. It's a possibility that such name existed. You may find a few such abbreviations in Mayakovsky's works, he is deriding numerous abbreviations and new names, which don't make sense to most people.

Hope this helps,
Anatoli
