Question MY HUSBAND, A RETIRED JET ENGINE MECHANIC, CHANGED MY BRAKES ON MY SAAB 9000-1997. THE BREAKS WORK WONDERFULLY, BUT THEY SQUEAL WHEN I STOP. NOT ALL THE TIME, BUT ENOUGH TO BE ANNOYING, NOT TO MENTION EMBARRASSING. HOW CAN THIS BE ELIMINATED? THANKS
LISA
Answer Oil them! Just kidding, what is most likely causing the squeal is either a slightly different grade (hardness) of brake pad, or some of the attaching hardware is loose or missing. Get hubby to have a quick peek to make sure it's been correctly reassembled, and if so, you could try some brake cleaning fluid to clean the rotors. If the squealing persists it could be the new pads, let 'em wear in, or get factory saab pads, they should not squeal.
