Sacramento - Sacramento Neighborhoods

Question
Hi Tracy.  Thank you for your recent answer regarding urban renewal in Sacramento.  I am continuing to persue the idea of moving there a realtor will NOT explicitly tell us what the downtown neighborhoods are like.  I am not interested in fending off gangs or having to remain locked in my house while the neighborhood goes through changes.  I am looking for a neighborhood that is developing toward a renewal and that is "safe". I am still looking for a 3 story building in an area that is live work.  What is happening along the river is that all developed?  And is Oak Park still gangsta?  Stuff like that.
Thanks again.

Answer
I would say as a long time resident of Sacramento, that Oak Park is in renewal, but is not "safe".  I would not move there with my own son but I would and have actively looked at living downtown. There are many developments with live/work spaces that seem like they'd work well for you. I'd focus more on the area around 19th and R streets and the area around 16th and L. Both are in urban renewal but are far enough along to see great progress and a new influx of restaurants, art, nightlife and culture.

Another option is to go to West Sacramento. They've focused a lot more energy on developing the riverfront, particularly around the Raley Field area. There are some great lofts and townhouses that are close to downtown but have a more urban vibe than some of the stuff actually downtown.

My final favorite if you're looking to buy is the Tapestri Square development. If you google it you'll find they have 3 story traditional brownstones that might meet your needs.

Good luck!
