AboutAndrew Pometti Expertise I am a Level 1 (Small Boat) US Sailing Certified Instructor on City Island (Bronx), NY. I have been sailing since I was a young child and starting racing as a Junior Sailor and continue both now. Racing as a Junior Sailor against the regular club members we won three first place trophies in the club owned boat. In another race we borrowed a members boat and placed third in a race that attracted sailors from around the NY,NJ,CT area.

Question Please offer some recommendations on a small beginner sailboat that would accomodate two adults (340 lbs total) yet be suitable for teaching a youngster to sail (prefer 1 sail). My budget would be up to $2000 for used, and if new $4000. Thank you.
Answer I have never dealt with the cost of the boats I've taught on, so I can not speak to price.
That being said, most sailing schools use BlueJays, 420's, and/or FJ's for the older children. These all have two sails, but pretty much anything that is big enough for two adults will. If you want to be on the boat with your child to teach them I do not suggest the smaller boats that are used for younger children (Optimists / Prams) as most adults (and older children) don't fit in them too comfortably. I couldn't really fit in one at 15 or 16 by myself to demonstrate something to the class, let alone get in with a student.
I would also suggest looking at the Rhodes 19, it is larger than the three I mention above, but is a good boat to learn on. It is big enough to fit all three of you (and a guest or two). It is small enough to teach on, but big enough to enjoy for a family day sail.
