Question What is a protein skimmer and do I need one and what does it do for my tank?
Answer Protein skimmers take away rotting material before is compromises water quality. They do wonders controlling nuisance algae, diatoms, detrius...etc. They also take away that oil film on the top of tank, increases oxygen level throughout.
They are a nessecity in tanks over 30 gallons, and for tanks under, while not being mandatory, are extremely beneficial and make life so much easier.
Regardless of the tank size you have, you should try to put a skimmer on it. I have heard of a lot of large tanks without skimmers that have crashed, likely for that reason.
