About Jennifer Schanely
Expertise
I have worked for sixteen years in a pet store where I am the fishroom manager. I can answer most questions pertaining to saltwater fish and coral care, feeding and behavior. I am knowledgeable in setting up and maintaining reef and fish only tanks and can usually identify creatures that come off of live rock. I am only slightly knowledgeable on disease treatment with prevention being my specialty. My approach to the marine tank is that of simplicity. Keeping a marine environment is easy and I encourage anyone intersted in this hobby to give it a try!

Experience
Besides owning various types of tanks,I have worked as a fishroom manager in a pet store for the past sixteen years. I answer questions to many fish related problems on a daily basis. At our store we have many fresh water tanks, salt fish tanks, corals, and other invertabrates. I also know alot about different products on the market and what works and what doesn't.

Education/Credentials
I think sixteen years experience is far more education than any school could have taught me.

Subject: Safe plastic to store water

Question
Can a plastic garbage can be used to safely store filtered water for my salt water aquarium without exposing the wildlife to harmful chemicals leeching from the plastic?

Answer
Hi Doug. If it is the fresh water with no salt added then yes it is safe. My RODI filter goes directly to a large garbage can that I have been using for over three years now and I have not seen any ill effects from it. I also use one at work to store our RODI water in. We sell over 100 gallons a week and have never had a problem! Just make sure of course it is new and rinsed out with a tight fitting lid. I went through about four different kinds and all of them ended up not being strong enough to hold the weight of the water. They leaked all over the basement. I use at home and at work the Rubbermaid Brute industrial strength kinds. They are the only ones I have found to stand up to the weight of the water and has a tight fitting lid. You can also buy a dolly that fits tightly on the bottom of this trash can that makes it easy to move even when it is full of water! Just a little tip!
