Subject: How do you rebuild a dynasty?

Question
This may be a trick question, since the last few years have shown NFL fans that it's extremely difficult to maintain a dynasty with free agency, but what can the 49ers do next to really make a significant jump back into the upper echelon of the NFL best and stay there?  This year's rookies are great (especially on defense), but what do you think is the next big move they need to make to get back to the postseason?  And what is the key to staying there?

Answer
Hi Louis,
Thanks for contacting me and asking your 49ers question.  In answer to it:
Any dynasty needs to be built around a defense, and I as you, use the word dynasty lightly, becuase builging a great team is one thing, retaining it is another.  Seeing to it that the defense has improved exponentially thus far this season, I would not try and move to many players in this area over the off-season.  Aside from a stellar defensive and, and likely a LB to take Norton's place I don't expect any huge moves, though the team should add depth.  The next thing we need to do is keep the coaching staff in tact.  They have done a great job so far, and despite criticism to some, I feel that there is a good staff on hand.  The final steps would be to solidify the special teams and minimize penalties.  We will eventually need a quarterback, but I feel confident with Garcia while we bring someone along.

The key to staying at the top is obviously winning.  Players like playing for winning teams, so if we're winning it becomes easier to replace players we lose.  Drafting many talents not just a few good players is essential too.  Firstly though, the team must get under the salary cap.

I could go on forever about what needs to be done at every position, but I think you can get most of it from the aforementioned.  The key though, is defense.
