Question Hello,
I am currently working at Dodger Stadium in their new Premium Seating Dept., which includes their new Luxury Suites and their new Dodger Dugout Club. This is my first year with the organization and I am very excited by the opportunity given to me. You see, when I was hired for this position I saw it as a foot in the door. I would really like to work in the administrative offices of a Major League Baseball team. The departments I`m interested in are Media Relations/Publicity, Marketing, Community Affairs, and Baseball Operations. However, I would take any opportunity presented to me. If there is any advice or leads that you can provide me with I would greatly appreciate it.
I am a college grad, I`m a hard worker, I`m ambitious, enthusiastic, and I`m a quick learner. I`m currently trying to gain full time employment with the Dodgers, but if that doesn`t work out I would like to work for another baseball team. And if THAT doesn`t pan out either, then I would like very much to work with a company affiliated with baseball (i.e., Rawlings, Easton, Mizuno, Elias Sports Bureau, ESPN, Fox Sports Net, Topps Baseball Cards, Upper Deck, Donruss, Fleer, any type of baseball-related start-up company, etc.).
Again, any insight, advice, or leads you could provide me with would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tony
Answer I don't really know that much about how the front office works, having been a "worker bee" for twelve seasons. I've heard it can be one of those "it's not what you know but who you know" things, and watching people shoot up the ranks at the different teams, that may well be true.
I'd suggest getting to know the people in the departments you're interested in...get a Dodgers media guide, there should be pics in there so you can recognize people, if they wear credentials or badges, be sure to check them when they come into/through your section, and make chit chat conversation. Once you've gotten them to recognize you, you can mention your ambitions and ask who they would recommend talking to.
As a college grad you may actually be at a disadvantage because a lot of teams like to hire people as interns and then work them into the "real team". But from the rumors I've heard, if you're willing to work cheap there's probably a door open for you somewhere!
